Red, white, and blue….flags, streamers, balloons , bunting, items of clothing and jewelry
At the lake…by the river…on the beach…in the backyard…in the town …in the city
Parades big and small…folded lawn chair precision brigade…little kids on bicycles…bands…marchers…antique cars…fire engines
Hamburgers…hotdogs…potato salad…cole slaw….macaroni salad…chips…watermelon…strawberries …ice cream
Lemonade…soda…iced tea…beer
Sunscreen…insect repellent…Bactine
“I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy”…..”You’re a Grand Old Flag”…”America the Beautiful”…”America”…”The Star-Spangled Banner”…”God Bless America”…all the military songs…”The Stars and Stripes Forever”

Reading of the Declaration of Independence
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both dying on the 4th of July, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence…Five years later, on the fourth, James Monroe dying…Calvin Coolidge born on the 4th of July, 1872
1884…very large birthday gift from France: the Statue of Liberty

Special personal memories
My father’s annual recitation of a nonsense poem: ” My mother gave me fifty cents to see the elephant jump the fence. He jumped so high he reached the sky and never came back ’til the 4th of July

Riding on the American Legion float in Medford because I had been a delegate to Girls’ State

Going to Milwaukee ‘s famous  2-hour circus Circus Parade  sponsored by Schlitz…31 bands…patriotic section with flags of all 50 states…40 ornately decorated circus wagons from Ringling Bros…a calliope…clowns…animals…horses…elephants…real hippopotamus walking down the street for part of the route with an attendant sprinkling him with water

Many years of Boston Pops concerts on the Esplanade with the 1812 Overture and spectacular fireworks
Watching fireworks over Wakefield’s Lake Quannapowitt… over Long Island’s Great South Bay…from a boat on Lake Winnipesaukee…out the window of a plane flying over NYC on a flight to Israel

Happy birthday U.S.A.!
